Kratom Use Disorder

Kratom is a herbal substance that can produce stimulant or opioid-like effects. While it’s sometimes used for pain relief or mood enhancement, regular use can lead to dependence and addiction—known as Kratom Use Disorder.

Symptoms

  • Taking larger amounts or using longer than intended

  • Strong cravings or urges to use kratom

  • Failed attempts to cut down or stop use

  • Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from kratom

  • Neglecting work, school, or personal responsibilities

  • Continued use despite physical, mental, or social harm

  • Developing tolerance (needing more for the same effect)

  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, tremors, insomnia, irritability, muscle aches)

Causes

  • Regular, high-dose or long-term use

  • Using kratom to self-medicate (pain, anxiety, depression)

  • Genetic vulnerability to addiction

  • Environmental and social factors

Treatment

  • Medical Detox
    – Supervised withdrawal with support to manage symptoms

  • Behavioral Therapy (CBT, MET)
    – Helps modify harmful thinking and behavior patterns

  • Support Groups
    – Peer-led groups like SMART Recovery or Narcotics Anonymous

  • Medication (in some cases)
    – Non-opioid meds may help ease withdrawal or manage anxiety/depression

  • Dual Diagnosis Treatment
    – For those with co-occurring mental health conditions
